Cornish ice-cream and delicious home cooking at Roskilly’s farm on the Lizard
Situated deep in the beautiful Lizard peninsula is Roskilly’s, a small, working Cornish farm, established by Joe and Rachel Roskilly over 60 years ago. From a 125-strong herd of Jersey cows, the small team here produce flavoursome ice-creams, fudge and yogurts, opening their gates to visitors who are encouraged to engage with the farm and its workings.
You can watch the afternoon milking, make friends with the goats and pigs, or walk across the meadow to feed the ducks on the lake. One of the big draws is their wonderful Croust House Restaurant (Croust is Cornish for a meal eaten out in the fields when working), which serves up home-baked pasties, pizzas and sweet treats, alongside its famous cream teas. We were there early so opted for the cooked breakfast, for him the traditional and for me the veggie. Both were delicious.
Inside, the converted cowshed oozes character. Handcrafted wooden benches and tables from son Toby sit alongside stained glass from daughter Bryn and wooden flooring, saved from a nearby school by Joe. In the summer months, the farm put on BBQ and entertainment nights, a perfect way to spend a balmy summer evening. After breakfast, we headed to the viewing gallery to see the newly born calves, the next generation of the Roskilly’s dairy herd to graze the farm’s beautiful pastures.
